Because it's made of cast iron, which retains heat superbly and cooks evenly, this pot is ideal for preparing savory stews or braising meats and vegetables. I got this for Christmas and I really love it. It is really big! If you want a regular size big pot, choose something around 7 qts. This one is for a big roast with lots of potatoes, or enough stew for 10 (at least). I store it on the shelf in the laundry room.

Also, the bottom of this pot is not enamel, it is the treated dark cast iron. I kind of like this better because it doesn't scratch as easily. I have a pot with an enameled bottom too, and it tends to scratch a bit when I am adjusting the position on the burner.
